Yesterday we woke up early to go exercise and played some soccer. Then we went to eat breakfast then got ready to go to the beach. The first thing we did though was that we went to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. We saw all kinds of sea animals and it was pretty fun. Then we went to eat some lunch close to the beach.

Yesterday we went to the beach. A word of advise would be to stay out of the water because it is very very cold. The water is ice cold. After about ten secounds you start to loose feeling in your legs.
After I went into the water I ran back onto the beach and I buried myself under the sand. Now that was warm, but all that sand on top of you can make it kind of hard to breath.
From there we tried to make a human pyramid and we got pretty high but then someone would fall and then we all fell. Then we tried to go for heights with only 6 people at the base and we almost completed it.
To end our stay at the beach Braulio and me wrestled a watch. We finally called it a tie after we went for three rounds.
All in all I had a great time on the beach and I learned not to go in the ocean.

The past two days were amazing, yesterday(Wednesday) we woke up really early and played soccer for our morning exercise then we went to Newport, Oregon. In Newport we went to the aquarium and it was so cool! I got to see the most exotic animals ever like sea horses, star fish and even an anaconda. That was the first time I have ever seen those kind of animals and it was so cool. Then we went to go do some labs, they were pretty cool, I got to touch live crabs. The best part was the ocean, I have never seen or touched an ocean in my life and it was the most beautiful thing ever!
Then today, we had a college fair and I learned about some Oregon Universities, which I think are good schools. They had some programs that I was really interested in. Then later tonight we are going to have a talent show and my group decided were going to do some imitations of people. I am pretty nervous and excited for it. I am sure it will be fun.
Overall, this whole experience was just amazing, I have no regrets coming here and I really wish I could stay. I met some funny, cool people and my group leaders were the best. I learned so much from them and they did a great job making this experience amazing. One thing I will miss the most is the group challenges with my group(especially the game called "Haha").

Hello!
Wednesday we went to the beach, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. I had so much fun! I loved the aquarium, it was my first time going to one and it was beautiful! At the beach it was kind of cold so I didn't enjoy it as much as I could of but I still got in and had lots of fun with Lily and Priscilla.
I'm so glad I came to this institute! I'm going to miss everyone of my new friends and this place. I want to thank everyone for this great opportunity.

Turning on the Lightbulb Olegario Tuesday
It is barely Tuesday; I have been here for only three days, and I feel like I have been here for a longer period of time. I have made many friends, and feel very comfortable with the rest of the students. It has been only a short period of time, but I have already learned many new interesting facts from all the presentations we have been given.
We did many fun activities today that made us challenge ourselves- making us use all our brain power to solve the presented obstacles.
All the counselors abetted us to be social therefore having to participate as much as one can in all the activities. Where we could have had a better learning experience.

Olegario aka ''OREGANO!"y yo sharing to the class our thoughts about Constancia. I really liked the movie but I thought that her hair was very annoying because it was so out of control! Oregano thought that Constancia was going to marry Brian and have kids and that she was going to end up working in the fields, but he was ''WRONG""!! Cause she ended up leaving Brian and decided to finish school. I was very proud of her because I would do the same thing. I wouldn't let anything get in my way not even my self.

Team work was a huge part this day. We learned how to gather thoughts and combine them together to build a bridge out of straws, marshmallows. toothpicks, tape, and paper clips. Our bridge met the important task, which was to teach us how to work together and not allow it to touch a sheet of aluminum foil that represented the ocean. Later on, we had to work together by wrapping an egg but keeping in mind that we were going to drop it and it wasn't suppose to break. During this day we also went to Dixon to play dodge ball and basketball. I had a great time playing basketball against a group of girls. We then took another challenge which was to play against David Cortes and Arturo Carrillo. It was so much fun because we beat them big time.

A problem solving challenge.
Every morning we wake up before 6:00 a.m. to get ready for our morning exercise. Today we split up into three groups to go do different exercises one group went to go jog around the field, one went to go play soccer, and one went to go play volleyball. I was in the group that was jogging and I had a pretty good time, I jogged with some friends and also walked a bit until our time was up.
Later in the day we went to our classes with our groups and learned as about problem solving and how to speak in front of big groups. I learned four things in the public speaking class and they are:
that it is okay to be nervous, that it only made you a better speaker, you are not talking to the whole group as one, you are having one-on-one conversations with everyone, the audience don't care about you they only care about what they learn from you and that you are not the most important person in the room.
These four lessons really helped me a lot and I plan on using them in the future. Later we split into 10 groups with different people and created a bridge and did an egg drop. These were really fun and I had amazing team mates. Then after dinner we went to go play dodge ball or basketball. Some friends and I chose to do basketball and we all had a blast. Today was amazing.

My experience at the challenge course was very intense. When I first got there I wasn't worried I was actually exited, I guess it was because I had no idea that we were going to do anything with the tall logs, but of course, I should of known better because they named it the "Challenge Course" for a reason. When we were doing the group activities (see picture 1) I had so much fun! One of the activities was letting yourself fall and trust your partner to catch you, I had serious trust issues, it took me a long time to be able to lean back even a bit.
When it was time to stop the group activities they later took us to were the harnesses, and helmets were (see picture 2). At that point I knew what was going on. I started getting a little bit nervous but I was determined to at least try. we all got ready and the brave people started to climb up and go through the course first. I was exited but worried. At one point, after few people had passed through the course, I decided to go. I chose Priscilla as my partner because I had started talking to her the day before and I liked her, so she seemed like a good person to share this moment with. When I started climbing the higher I got the more scared I got.
At about half way up I started freezing up but I got to the top and when I did that's when all of the anxiety came crashing towards (see picture 3). I completely froze up, I held on to the log and I just couldn't let go. After like 2 minutes people started cheering me on and I got the courage to let go of my hugging log and take baby steps.
when I got to the middle Priscilla freaked out but strangely I remembered how they had told me to go around my partner when we got to the middle, so I was not as terrified as she was (see picture 4). We made it and my second most terrifying moment was when I had to get down, I had to lean away and let myself fall. I was so scared! I didn't know how I was going to be able to trust the people that were holding me up, but when they tightened my rope it gave me confidence and I let go. I got down crying but so proud of myself. I had never even gotten on any fair ride because of the height of some of the rides. This was one of the best days of my life.

Today, I did unas de las cosas mas dificiles. Algo que nunca abia echo en mi vida. Cuando iva subiendo no pense que iba a hacer tan dificil y me subi como si nada, pero cuando ya estaba arriba casi estaba llorando. So pedi que me bajaran! But other than that i had fun.

Today was the day of the challenge course. When I first got to the challenge course, I was so nervous but kind of excited. It was harder than I expected, everyone made it look so easy, so I assumed it would be for me as well. When I started climbing the logs of the course challenge I was getting more and more terrified but I continued to climb. When I got to the top I looked down and I realized that I was higher than I expected. It was the most scariest thing of my life, I wanted to get down so bad but I pushed my self to continue and at the end of the log I was starting to have an anxiety attack but I had a good friend named Ana, who was doing the challenge with me, and she helped me calm down. Even though I cried and panicked, I am so glad that I did this challenge because now I am fearless to try almost about everything. Today was one of the best days I've had in this institute so far.

Today we got to a challenge course, it was awesome! First we started of with some ground exercises and then we got to go on the elements. At first I was feeling really excited about going up on the elements but when we were getting instructed for it I started feeling nervous.
During the challenge course I was excited but I still felt a bit highly-strung about being 35' in the air. The first time it was very bad but it loosened up as I went on more of the elements. When I started the power jump it was very hard to get on top of the pole. Then I took aim and jumped. For a second I thought I had jumped to high but right then the bar sort of jumped into my hands and I held on. I then did five pull ups just for fun.
Afterwards I felt awesome for doing all the elements that were available. I especially felt proud and great for beig the first to complete the power jump.
I learned that I can do a lot more than I thought I could.

One, two, three, four.... five, six, seven, eight. During this activity, we learned how to work hard and how to listen to each other. This was very important because we set our goals as a team, and we had to accomplish it. This morning, I was able to face my fear. I never thought that I would do something very adventuress like the rope courses. It was a very challenging activity. I didn't really want to try it but I risked it and decided to give it a try. By doing these activities, I realized that in life there are times in which things seem difficult but in order to succeed you have to take a risk. I really enjoyed this day and hanging out with my friends at the bowling ally. I had the chance to learn to play pool. I feel very excited knowing that during this challenge I have been trying out new things and learning from it to put it in practice in my life.

Hello, my name is Jenesis. I had no clue about the Oregon Migrant Leadership Institute. The way I found out about this program was from a friend that got the chance to come and experienced college life. She described me all the activities in detail. When she told me about her experience it seemed pretty interesting. She motivated me to try something new and experience how it felt meeting new people. I then applied for this program hoping that I would get accepted. Once I turned in all the paper work, I then waited to see if I would get accepted. Weeks later I was called in by the principal and to my huge surprise was that I got accepted.
The reason this program gave me a chance is, because they noticed that I try to maintain good grades and try to achieve my goals. I enjoy learning new things. One of my greatest experiences so far at Oregon State University (OSU) is that I have been able to meet new people and interact with them. This is the best experience that I have had so far. I'm so excited and I know I will enjoy it even more.

My name is Claudia. I'm here at the Oregon Migrant Leadership Institute. I came here because I want to gain more leadership skills like public speaking. I want to know more about scholarships so I can be ready after high school for college. The most important reason I'm here is because of my mom. She has worked very hard her whole life to give my brothers, my sister, and me a better life. She always tells me that she doesn't want me to end up working in the fields like her. My mom has always encouraged me to continue school. She's my rock, someone I can depend on.

I'm here because I want to become more independent, and I'm curious about how college life is. I guess I'm also here to ease away my anxiety towards college. I want to learn how to be a better leader and to show my self that going to college is going to help me even though I am not that convinced. My parents have always been against college although they would never tell me, "No, you can't go", I know they don't want me to go because they have told me many times they would be more then happy if I didn't go to college or if I did that I only went for the minimum time. Its not that they don't want me to improve my life, I can assure you they want nothing else but that, but college, to them, is not a way to improve my life they have other ideas.
Gerardo Sunday July 24, 2011
I am here because one of my teachers thought I was a good student and had the potential to participate at the Oregon Migrant Leadership Institute. So I made a essay and I got accepted to the program. I am looking forward to learn more things about college and how to become a better leader with people and the community. One thing that I hope to learn is: When you have to requester for college and when to do essays for scholarships. A motto that reflects me will be "All Day Every Day"
Daniel Sunday July 24, 2011
I am here today because one day, towards the end of 8th period, I heard my principal call the names of a lot of senior Mexicans over the intercom. When I didn't hear my name called I thought "well some things going on" and I went to the commons where the students that were called where supposed to meet. All of the kids that were called showed up and they made a crowd in front of the office. I stood at the back of the crowed while the principal told the other students about a camp for migrants and right away I knew I wanted to go to this camp. When he finished he said there would be a meeting Friday if anyone was interested and when everyone was leaving I made eye contact with the principal. Right after that he told me to go to the meeting too. From that moment on everything went by faster, from filling out the application, to actually being chosen to go. My parents had nothing against me going because everything was paid for. That is the reason I am here.
I hope to learn how to be a better leader and as much about college and about college life. I am really looking forward to this whole week.
My motto is "Honor &Strength".

My name is olegario, and I am attending the 2011 leadership institute that is being held at OSU. I am looking forward to what this program has to offer to me, because this could help me achieve great knowledge about the daily college life is lived by the average college student. This program i think will also give me the knowledge to be able to become a leader in my community, because I will be interacting with leaders from all over Oregon, who are helping the Latino community, which one of my goals that i hope to be able to achieve.
Priscilla 7/24/2011
My name is Priscilla, I attended this leadership institute at OSU to explore my options for college and to experience a good time learning new skills and meeting new people. I hope to learn how to get out of my shell and talk to new people and not be shy, so my communication skills can get better. I hope to become a great leader because some day I would love to be my own boss and to lead a crowd. I believe this program will help me to open up more doors and change my mind about what kind of life I want and what kind of career I want to pursue.
